Wrapping Up My Outreachy Internship
As I reach the final week of my Outreachy internship, I can’t help but pause and reflect on this journey. When I started, I was both excited and nervous — unsure of how well I would adapt, whether I’d be able to contribute meaningfully, and how the open-source community would receive me. Looking back now, I can confidently say this experience has been transformative.
My Fears vs. Reality
One of my biggest fears was that I might not be able to handle the technical challenges. Coming in, I knew I had gaps in my knowledge and I worried about making mistakes. But over time, I realized that mistakes were actually stepping stones to learning. My mentors and community members were incredibly supportive, reminding me that open source is all about collaboration, patience, and continuous growth.
Highlights of the Internship
The most amazing part of this internship has been seeing my contributions go live and knowing that my work impacts real users. Beyond the code, being part of a diverse, global community of passionate contributors made this experience unique and inspiring.
Growth in Skills
During these 13 weeks, I’ve grown both technically and personally:
Technical Skills:
Gained hands-on experience with Kotlin/Java for Android development.
Improved debugging skills and learned to navigate large codebases.
Understood how to write cleaner, maintainable code.
Learned best practices for contributing to open-source projects (PR reviews, testing, and documentation).
Communication Skills:
Learned to clearly explain blockers and ask for help without hesitation.
Improved in documenting my progress and giving concise project updates.
Built confidence in discussing ideas with mentors and community members.
The Role of My Mentors
My mentors were a cornerstone of this journey. They not only guided me technically but also created a safe space for me to grow, experiment, and even fail without judgment. Their feedback pushed me to think critically about my work and continuously improve. I’m deeply grateful for their time, patience, and encouragement.
Project Contributions
Over the course of the internship, I contributed to Nearby feature in wikimedia commons app. While there are still some next steps to fully complete the project, I’m proud of the progress made and confident that my work will serve as a strong foundation for future contributors.
Looking Ahead
This may be the wrap-up of my Outreachy internship, but it’s not the end of my open-source journey. I plan to:
Stay engaged with the Wikimedia Commons app project and contribute further.
Attend open-source events and conferences to keep learning and connecting.
Continue building confidence in Android and open-source contributions.
Final Thoughts
Outreachy has been more than just an internship — it’s been a journey of growth, community, and discovery. I started out unsure of myself, but I’m finishing with more confidence, stronger skills, and a deep appreciation for the power of open source.
To future interns reading this: don’t be afraid of challenges. Ask questions, lean on your community, and celebrate every small win along the way.
Thank you to my mentors, the Wikimedia community, and the Outreachy organizers for making this journey so meaningful. 💙
✨ That’s my wrap-up! Excited to see where this journey takes me next.
